Apple started its week of announcements today with the introduction of a new 24" iMac with the M4 SoC.
The biggest change is the addition of the M4 chip, which, according to Apple, is twice as fast as the M1 iMac and six times faster than "the most popular Intel-based iMac model"1, whatever that is supposed to mean. The M4 chip, by extension, also improves NPU performance for Apple Intelligence.
All of the colors received a very slight refresh, with some changes more noticeable than others, and a nanotexture (matte) display option has been added.
However, the most interesting upgrade to me is that Apple finally raised the base RAM to 16GB, after sticking with 8GB for just over 12 years.2
A short, Apple Keynote-style video was also published along with the announcement, with John Ternus noting that this is the first of three product announcements this week. Let's look forward to the MacBook Pro and Mac mini coming in the next two days!
2. 8GB of RAM was first made standard on the Late 2012 21.5"/27" iMac.
